CALL TO ACTION: Save Nevada's National Monuments

Secretary Zinke is traveling to Nevada this Monday to review the state's national monuments, Basin & Range and Gold Butte. Senator Cortez Masto has written a passionate defense of the state's monuments. Over 98% of public comments submitted on national monuments came from people who favored keeping monuments intact and protected. Will Secretary Zinke listen?

Make sure he hears loud and clear that we want Nevada's monuments protected!

PHONE CALLS: Call (202) 208-7351 and ask that Secretary Zinke keep Nevada's two national monuments - Basin & Range and Gold Butte - whole and protected.

EMAILS: Email the Department of the Interior HERE and Zinke HERE. Ask that they keep Gold Butte and Basin & Range monuments protected. You can express this in your own words (especially if YOU ARE FROM NEVADA OR HAVE VISITED THESE MONUMENTS). Otherwise, copy and paste the following:

I urge Secretary Zinke to keep Nevada's National Monuments protected as they are today. Nevada's public lands generate 148,000 jobs and nearly $15 billion a year. Further, these lands provide vital habitat to the state's fish, wildlife and fauna, and outdoor recreation opportunities to its citizens. Basin and Range monument is of immense historical and cultural significance to local tribes, housing artifacts more than 13,000 years old. Gold Butte is home to fossilized tracks dating back 170 million years. These lands are of great importance and must be preserved as they are.

**UPDATED** CALL TO ACTION: Save Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge/Big Bend NP from Trump's Wall

Trump is moving forward with his border wall by looking to break ground soon on a 3 mile stretch of in the biodiverse Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge. He is using the REAL ID Act to skirt the requirement for an environmental impact report. This refuge is on the bucket list for birders across the country and is home to the endangered ocelot. Building a wall here could drive the ocelot to extinction and damage local bird populations as well as harm the booming eco-tourism economy in the region. (Source from NRDC)

UPDATED: Big Bend National Park is also at risk from having a wall built through it and the bulldozers and chainsaws destroyed critically important, restored habitat at a butterfly sanctuary in Texas, along the border.

GOP Senator John Cornyn is a strong opponent of this wall in an eco tourist region such as Santa Ana  Wildlife Refuge. Let's push him to fight harder against it.

Please stand up for Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge! Stop the Wall; Save the Refuge!

EMAIL: Contact forms for Senators HERE, for your representatives HERE. Write in your own words or copy and paste the script below:

I am opposed to building a border wall or fence in the biodiverse Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge or through Big Bend National Park or on private land without the owners' consent.  If built, this wall could render the ocelot, the jaguar and the Mexican gray wolf extinct and would have a detrimental impact on the other wildlife living in the refuge. In addition, building this wall would damage the eco-tourism economy of the region. Please oppose the building of this wall.

CALL: Find your Senators' phone numbers HERE and your Representative's phone numbers HERE. Ask that your legislators oppose the building of a wall in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge or Big Bend National Park.

POSTCARDS: Send a postcard to the following individuals:
- Your Two Senators (Find their contact info HERE; send to a DISTRICT office)
- Your Congressman or Congresswoman (Find contact info HERE, send to a DISTRICT office)
In your postcards, identify yourself as a constituent (include your city so they can verify). Write one to three sentences asking your member of Congress to the building of a wall in Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge or Big Bend National Park. Maybe draw a picture of an animal or plant.

TWEETS:

Quote THIS TWEET and tag your senators AND your representative.

Protest Secretary Zinke at ALEC Conference

Our Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, will be addressing guests at ALEC's annual meeting this week. ALEC passed resolution over 20 years ago opposing national monuments and has been at the forefront of returning federal public lands to the states.

Secretary Zinke works for us and has received millions of public comments begging him to keep our public lands protected. Will he heed public opinion? Or fold to ALEC's lobbying that he "not hesitate to rein in the excesses of previous presidents and free states and local communities from under the federal boot." (ALEC.org).

Please let Secretary Zinke know what you think of this conflict of interest.

Millions of Americans have made public comments asking you to preserve our national monuments. It does not seem appropriate for you to attend ALEC's annual meeting this week when ALEC has been lobbying to reduce and abolish national monuments for 20 years.

FACEBOOK PAGE: Leave the above comment or one of your own on an existing post HERE.

CALL TO ACTION: Public Comments for Our Marine Monuments & Sanctuaries

Our marine monuments and sanctuaries are at risk during Trump's executive order dictating a "review" of national monuments. If protections are reduced, these special places could be opened for energy and mineral exploration or commercial fishing. At risk are over 425 million acres of habitat for marine mammals and coral reefs and beaches.

ELECTRONIC PUBLIC COMMENT:

DUE AUGUST 15 AT 11:59 PM EDT. Please prepare your comment in a document where you can save it. Once it is complete, submit your comment HERE and please also email it to your Senators (contact info HERE) and to your representative (contact info HERE).

WHAT TO SAY:

If you have visited any of the monuments or sanctuaries under review or have a connection to them, please address that particular monument. (HERE is a list of monuments under review). The Department of Commerce is looking for personal stories.

* IF YOU LIVE IN ONE OF THE AFFECTED STATES - CALIFORNIA, HAWAII, OREGON OR WASHINGTON - OR IN MICHIGAN OR MASSACHUSETTS - PLEASE MENTION IT IN YOUR COMMENTS AND MAKE SOME CONNECTION TO VISITING THE MONUMENTS OR THE COAST.

Please keep the 11 marine monuments and sanctuaries protected as they are today. Each of these sites are the result of decades of broad, bipartisan support expressed by our elected officials and the public. Each monument underwent a robust public process. Finally, the monuments demonstrably cause no harm to the economy, specifically the longline fishing industry. Please maintain these vital protections for the benefit of wildlife, people, and our entire region.

* National marine monuments and sanctuaries safeguard biodiversity by protecting ecosystems. In these sanctuaries, unique ocean life flourishes. These monuments are also important culturally and as part of our national heritage. Further, these monuments provide nursery and spawning habitats for commercially valuable fish while also protecting thousands of threatened species.

* National Monument or sanctuary designation often increases - NOT decreases - jobs in areas surrounding the land at issue. While it is true that drilling, dumping and mining jobs may decrease, OVERALL jobs increase and the sectors of tourism in a huge boost to coastal economies.  For instance, 2015 NOAA report found that recreational fishing in California's marine sanctuaries supports more than 1,300 jobs, generating more than $200 million a year. Further, the Monterey Bay sanctuaries alone provide more than 35,000 jobs and a $3.5 billion dollar a year tourism economy. Despite the popular argument, national monument or sanctuary designation HELPS, and does not hurt, local economies.

** SPECIFIC TALKING POINTS FOR EACH MONUMENTS OR SANCTUARY HERE. (These are VERY helpful for crafting individualized comments).

** SPECIFIC TALKING POINTS FOR PACIFIC MARINE MONUMENTS ARE HERE.

** TALKING POINTS FROM MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM HERE.

POSTCARDS (MAIL BY AUGUST 8):

You may submit comments via postcard or letter, identified by docket ID NOAA-NOS-2017-0066, to:
E.O. 13795 Review
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Silver Spring Metro Campus Building 4 (SSMC4), Eleventh Floor
1305 East-West Highway
Silver Spring, MD 20910

* Please also send postcards to your Senators (addresses may be found HERE) and to your representative (addresses may be found HERE) asking them to fight to keep marine sanctuaries protected.

* If you have visited any of the monuments under review or have a connection to them, please address that particular monument. (HERE is a list of 11 marine monuments and sanctuaries under review). Department of Commerce is looking for personal stories.

* If you do not have a connection to one of the specific monuments involved, personalize the following:

I treasure our marine sanctuaries and monuments. I visit these special places whenever I have the chance to find peace and enjoy the beauty and wildlife.  I want them to remain protected as they are today.

CALL TO ACTION: Demand Senator Cardin Withdraw Sponsorship of SB1514

Sadly, environmental champion, Maryland's Senator Ben Cardin has joined a group of Senators to co-sponsor a bill that would strip wolf protections in the Great Lakes, circumvent the Endangered Species Act and prevent the EPA from ever addressing lead poisoning in fishing gear. In exchange for these decidedly anti-environmental, anti-Democratic positions, the bill would also reauthorize several conservation wetlands programs -  "a procedural action by Congress that has no real-work impact of funding levels."

Per Center for Biological Diversity's Brett Harti: “This legislation won’t help conservation on the ground anywhere — not a single animal or plant will benefit from this horrible legislation. Sadly Cardin is trading killing thousands of wolves for a largely symbolic effort to help Chesapeake Bay. This is a disaster.”

HERE IS THE SCRIPT:  I am asking Sen. Cardin to rescind his sponsorship of the "HELP for Wildlife Act" (S. 1514). This bill is bad for our wildlife and would tarnish the Senator's environmental record.

MARYLAND RESIDENTS:

Please call and email (COMMENT FORM HERE) Senator Cardin and demand that he rescind his co-sponsorship of SB1514.

NON-MARYLAND AND MARYLAND RESIDENTS:

TWEET: .@SenatorCardin Pls withdraw sponsorship of #SB1514 - would kill wolves, poison rivers, undermine ESA! pic.twitter.com/ejcdJyi27V 💔🐺🐟
