CALL TO ACTION: Decency Demands a NO Vote On HJRes69 & SJRes 18

The United States House of Representatives shocked citizens with a modicum of decency when they passed a joint resolution removing the Obama administration rule on hunting regulations in national wildlife refuges in Alaska. The following inhumane hunting practices will be allowed on our federal public lands in Alaska IF the Senate passes a sister joint resolution and it is signed by the President:
  • Killing black bear cubs or mother with cubs at den sites
  • Killing brown bears over bait
  • Trapping and killing brown and black bears with steel-jaw leghold traps or wire snares
  • Killing wolves and coyotes during denning season
  • Chasing bears aircraft
Please call, write and tweet your Senators NOW and tell them that decency demands a NO vote on House Joint Resolution 69/Senate Joint Resolution 18.

CALLS: Find your Senators' phone numbers HEREIt is best to call one of the local offices, rather than the DC office. Tell the staff member who answers that you want your Senator to oppose the Senate equivalent of House Joint Resolution 69 which governs hunting regulations on National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska. (** BONUS: save these numbers in your phone contacts to make it easier to call in the future).

EMAILS AND LETTERS: Write your Senators. Addresses for Senators HERE. Letters sent to district offices have to be removed from envelopes and collated into topic piles whereas letters sent to DC have a long backup before reaching your member of Congress. If you cannot mail your letter, send it to through your Senators' contact form HERE. Tell your Senator the following (or use your own words):

I am horrified by House Joint Resolution 69 which would allow inhumane hunting practices, such as bear baiting, trapping, killing wolves and coyotes in their dens, killing bear cubs with mothers, and shooting bears from aircraft. These outdated, barbaric hunting methods have no place in our National Wildlife Refuges. Common decency demands that you vote NO on the sister regulation in the Senate.

TWEETS: Tweet Sheet is HERE

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Consider writing a Letter to the Editor of your local newspaper. If you have written a personal letter to your Senator, it can likely be turned into a Letter to the Editor with little effort. This tool from Endangered Species Coalition will help you find your local papers. Please let us know if you get published!

FACEBOOK MESSAGES: Find your Senator's Facebook page HERE. Leave a comment to an existing article saying the following:

I oppose House Joint Resolution 69 and Senate Joint Resolution 18 which would allow barbaric hunting methods in federal wildlife refuges in Alaska. Decency demands that you vote NO on the sister resolution in the Senate.

Write a Love Letter to Congress about the Endangered Species Act

When people speak about impacting legislators, one thing is consistently mentioned: personal stories. Our members of Congress will often read constituent letters on the floor. In a meeting with a legislator, I was told that letters with a personal story go to the top of the stack and will sometimes have a staff member approaching the legislator on this topic. In a thread on feedback from a GOP Senator, personal stories were also at the top of the list.

So let's give it to them!!

The major call to action for this event is to write a personal letter to your members of Congress, explaining why you love the Endangered Species Act and do not want to see it weakened or repealed.

Unfortunately, this action is limited to US residents only though there will be lots of opportunities next week for non-US residents to speak out on Twitter and on Facebook in favor of the Endangered Species Act.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1) Think about an instance where you have encountered wildlife and appreciated the Endangered Species Act. This can be in person, seeing a photograph, reading an article or story.  How did this make you feel? Did you share the experience with any friends or family? Did this spark any changes in your life?

2) Write your letter somewhere it can be copied and pasted because you are going to send it to all three of your members of Congress (your two Senators and your House representative).

3) In your letter, make sure to identify yourself as a constituent and include your contact information so that they can confirm that you are, indeed, a constituent.

4) If possible, mail these as paper letters to a district office for your representatives.  Addresses for Senators HERE and for House HERE. Letters sent to district offices have to be removed from envelopes and collated into topic piles whereas letters sent to DC have a long backup before reaching your member of Congress.

5) If you cannot mail this, sending it to your member of Congress through their contact form is a great alternative. (Contact forms for Senators HERE and for House HERE) It is just important that they hear your voice!

Here is an example of an Endangered Species Act love letter to Congress.

Please aim to mail your love letter no later than February 17. Please consider posting a photograph of your letter in our event or leaving a comment letting us know that you have sent your letter.  Share your love for the Endangered Species Act!

CALL TO ACTION: Ban Fur Trapping in California

SIGN AND SHARE PETITION HERE

TWEET: .@CaliforniaDFW Less than 100 Californians engage in commercial trapping for fur. Pls ensure licensing fees in line with true cost.

FACEBOOK: Please leave a comment on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Facebook page telling them to "Please ensure that licensing fees for fur trapping are in line with the true cost incurred by trappers."

LETTER (CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS ONLY): Write a personalized email to the Commission. Include your complete contact information in the email or it will not be counted. Letters may be emailed to fgc@fgc.ca.gov. Please also cc your emails to info@projectcoyote.org.  Talking points from Project Coyote are below:
  • A Fish and Game Code provision was added with the passage of SB 1148 (Pavley) for the 2013-2014 trapping season that requires license fees be raised to cover program and implementation costs from fee-based programs. Yet the Commission has failed to comply with this straightforward requirement for four years now. We cannot stand for a fifth year of non-compliance.
  • If the Commission cannot ensure that trapping license fees are raised to a level that would realistically cover the state’s trapping program implementation costs, the Commission should eliminate the fur-trapping program.
  • Fewer than 100 Californians engage in commercial trapping for the fur trade. As public trustees of California's wildlife, the Commission should require licensing fees that are in line with the true cost incurred by this tiny minority of people who enjoy trapping animals for fun and profit.
